Four Roman Catholic Popes who died during sex

Roman Catholic priests live in celibacy, which is why they do not get married. However, these priests and Popes have done otherwise and in the process met with death.

Here are four of the Roman Catholic Popes who died as a result of sex:

1. Pope Leo VII (936-9)

Pope Leo VII

He died due to a heart attack he suffered while having sex. Pope Leo VII (Latin: Leo VII; died 13 July 939) was Pope for three years from 3 January 936 until his death in 939. He was preceded by Pope John XI and followed by Pope Stephen VIII.

He was thought to be a Benedictine monk. Leo was the priest of the church of St. Sixtus in Rome.

Though the circumstances of the death of Pope Leo VII was not recorded, an unauthentic legend claimed from centuries after, that he died of a heart attack while engaging in sexual Intercourse with his girlfriend. Leo VII was buried at St. Peter’s Basilica after his death in July 939.

 

2. Pope John VII (955-64) of Greek ancestry was the pope from 1 March 705 until his death in 707.

Pope John VII

Pope John VII was one of the popes of the Byzantine captivity.

According to reports, an angry man bludgeoned Pope John VII to death after he caught him having sex with his wife.

Pope John VII died 18 October, 707 and was interred in the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary which had been added on to St. Peter’s.

3. Pope John XIII (965-72)

Pope John XII

John XIII (Latin: Ioannes XIII; c. 930/935 – 6 September 972) was Pope from 1 October 965 to his death in 972.

Pope John XIII, born in Rome in the 930s was the son of Giovanni, a Bishop.

It was alleged that Pope John XIII was murdered by a husband who felt cheated after he caught the Pope having sex with his wife.

John XIII who died on September 6, 972, was buried in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. Pope Benedict VI succeeded him.

 

4. Pope Paul II (Latin: Paulus II; 23 February 1417 – 26 July 1471)

Pope Paul II

Pope Paul II was born as Pietro Barbo and was Pope from 30th August 1464 till his death in 1471.

 

Born in Venice, Pope Paul II who was a nephew of Pope Eugenius IV (1431–1447) despite being trained as a merchant adopted a spiritual career after the election of his Uncle as Pope.

Pope Paul II was very popular for his generosity and was an ambitious young cleric whose promotion was fast. He became a cardinal in 1440.

It was recorded that Pope Paul II died suddenly of a heart attack he suffered on 26 July 1471. The reports about his death alleged that he died whilst being sodomized by a page boy.
