Parents mourn as 50 children die from strange sickness in Jigawa State

50 children have been killed by a strange sickness and 40 others are hospitalized in Gidan Dugus village of Wangara district, Dutse Local Government of Jigawa State.

Parents are presently mourning in the state as the children who are below age five have been dying on a daily basis from high fever, stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhoea and shortage of blood.

The parents whose children have been hospitalized are afraid of what the outcome may be with their children as the state of their health is becoming worse.

Haladu Usman, a parent who lost his seven children to the strange illness, said:  “Within 14 days, I lost seven of my children, three males, and four female. The children, aged between three and one and infant, died one after the other, I lost three in a day.”

Another parent, Salisu Abdullahi, who lost four of his children in one week, despite several efforts made to secure medication from nearby clinics said: “I was scared by this unknown sickness which consumed the lives of innocent children of this community.”

The ward head of Gidan Dugus, Mallam Umar Dashiru, explained that what happened was alarming and pathetic, saying that the community now live in fear and agony of seeing its children die in numbers.

He said after the case was reported to the state government, a team of medical personnel was sent to take blood samples of some children for test; he added that the results of the test is not yet out.
