Senior Pastor Poju Oyemade has responded to increasing calls for religious leaders to become more actively involved in addressing Nigeria's political and socio-economic challenges, saying pastors should not be expected to shoulder responsibilities that belong to all citizens.

Speaking during a sermon, Oyemade said religious leaders have already made significant contributions to society and should not be pressured to solve every national problem.
The Covenant Christian Centre founder recounted a conversation with a prominent politician who was surprised to find influential business executives, banking professionals and other accomplished individuals serving as ushers and volunteers within the church.
According to Oyemade, the politician observed that Nigeria could undergo meaningful transformation if people with such expertise and influence channelled the same level of dedication into national development.
The pastor, however, expressed frustration over the recurring expectation that religious leaders must always step forward to rescue the country from its challenges.
He maintained that pastors are citizens first and should not be singled out as the solution to Nigeria's problems.
"We have done our work. Don't call us beyond what we have done. We are all citizens together. Please leave us alone," Oyemade said.
