• Dad responds with understanding and strong beliefs in democracy
In Nigerian politics, family and party loyalty often mix in interesting ways, and this week brought a heartfelt moment many young people can relate to. Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, officially left the PDP for the APC on January 15. He even promised to help President Bola Tinubu win again in 2027. For anyone navigating big life choices, this story shows how personal decisions can ripple through family.

Atiku, who ran for president in 2023, shared a calm and thoughtful response. He called it a personal choice and said: “The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect. As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.
