LASU Begins Disciplinary Action Over Assault on Student by Parent in Ikeja

The Lagos State University (LASU) has commenced disciplinary processes following the alleged assault of one of its students by a parent at a private hostel in Ikeja, an incident that was captured on video and quickly went viral online.

The footage showed a woman repeatedly beating a younger woman while bystanders at the scene pleaded with her to stop.

A caption accompanying the video alleged that the woman had gone to the hostel to confront her daughter's roommate, though the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation were not immediately clear.

The students involved belong to the university's College of Medicine, although LASU noted that the incident took place outside its campus premises.

In a statement issued on Friday, the university said the assaulted student had already reported the matter to the police and that it had been addressed through the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

LASU's Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, said the institution had also initiated disciplinary action against those involved, in line with its rules and regulations.

The university condemned the incident in strong terms, describing violence, intimidation and harassment directed at students, staff or visitors as unacceptable under any circumstances.

"Any form of assault, intimidation, or harassment of students, staff, or visitors, whether within or outside the University premises, is unacceptable and goes against the core values upon which this institution was founded," the statement said.

LASU urged its students to conduct themselves responsibly at all times and to report any issues that could threaten their safety to the appropriate authorities without delay.

The institution also appealed to parents to engage constructively with the university rather than resorting to confrontation, and encouraged them to guide their children and wards toward upholding discipline and integrity.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety and academic success of its students.
