Zimbabwe’s former vice-president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, will be announced as the country’s next president after former President Mugabe’s rule of 37-years.

The state broadcaster says Mnangagwa will be announced on Friday as the new President of Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa, who fled Zimbabwe for South Africa two weeks ago, was also said to be on his way back to the country on Wednesday ahead of his swearing -in.

It is widely believed that Mnangagwa’s removal from office that led to the intervention of the military to force an end to Mr Mugabe‘s 37-year long rule.

Following President Mugabe’s resignation, Zanu-PF’s spokesperson said that Mr Mnangagwa, 71, would step in place of Mugabe for the remainder of his term until September 2018 when elections would take place.
The state-run Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) confirmed that his swearing-in ceremony had been scheduled for Friday.

Mr Mnangagwa, who has been nicknamed the “crocodile” due to his political craftiness in a statement from exile called on Zimbabweans to unite to rebuild the country.

“Together, we will ensure a peaceful transition to the consolidation of our democracy, and bring in a fresh start for all Zimbabweans and foster peace and unity,” Mr Mnangagwa told Zimbabwe’s NewsDay on Tuesday.

However, amidst gladness in the country over the resignation of Mr Mugabe, some have questioned whether the handover to Mr Mnangagwa will bring about real change in the country.
