We intend to teach hard work, respect, and faith. But unintentionally, we model other behaviours that shape how they handle money, relationships, stress, and themselves.

Awareness lets us catch and gently shift these patterns without guilt or perfection. Here are 11 common choice behaviours many of us pass on without meaning to.

1. Avoiding difficult conversations.

You dodge talks about money worries, health scares, or family tensions to "protect" the kids or keep peace. They learn silence is safer than honesty. Challenge: Kids sense the tension anyway and may grow up swallowing their own feelings. Insight: In many African homes, we inherited this from parents focused on survival. Practical step: Start small during calm moments, so they see open dialogue as normal, not scary.

2. Comparing people to motivate.

You mean well, to push excellence, but kids internalise, fuelling sibling rivalry or low confidence with the outside world. In our culture of achievement stories at church or family gatherings, it feels normal. Try praising the effort instead.

3. Handling stress by snapping or withdrawing.

After a tough day at work or market, you raise your voice over small things or go quiet. Your kids learn emotions are dangerous or best hidden. Model it best by regulation, not explosion or escape.

4. Tying worth to achievement or provision.

You celebrate report cards loudly but gloss over a kind act or honest effort, or you work endless hours while seeming unavailable, your children will absorb that love or value depends on results or money brought home. Especially in hustle-driven communitites, this can create adults who burn out chasing validation. Balance it by praising their character daily.

5. Using money as a quick fixer or silence tool.

Over-giving when trying to make your kids do something teaches kids that emotions or boundaries can be bought off, not addressed. In homes where finances fluctuate with fuel prices or business ups and downs, this feels practical. Instead, sit with the feeling first, then decide together.

6. Prioritising others' opinions over family needs.
