The Lagos State Government has re-introduced the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise across the state, effective from Saturday, 25th April 2026. This initiative, which will hold on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30am and 8:30am, aims to promote cleanliness, improve public health, and reduce flooding by ensuring every resident, business, and community actively participates in keeping Lagos clean.

Here are all you need to know:

#1 It will be carried out between 6:30am and 8:30am of the last Saturday of every month effective from 25th of April, 2026.
#2 There will be a controlled movement during the period.
#3 During the exercise, the Ministry and its agency, enforcement officers, and Local Government Sanitation Inspectors will conduct physical inspections during and after the sanitation window to ensure that all houses comply with the directive and/or sanction defaulters.
#4 LAWMA intervention trucks will go around to cart away the bagged wastes generated during the exercise.
#5 There will be enforcement by the state environmental enforcement agencies and other security Taskforce team.
#6 There will be reward for the Cleanest LG/LCDA, also Cleanest Street.

Business and Commercial Premises

Business and Commercial Premises

#1 Business owners are responsible for cleaning their premises — including store fronts, parking areas, and waste storage areas — during the sanitation period.
#2 All business waste must be pre-sorted and ready for LAWMA collection by 8:30 AM.
#3 Markets, filling stations, churches, mosques, schools, hospitals, and banks must each designate a Sanitation Coordinator responsible for organizing staff and facility cleaning.
#4 Businesses generating hazardous or medical waste must use LASEPA licensed contractors — such waste must NOT be mixed with general LAWMA collection.

Street and Community Leaders

Street and Community Leaders (CDAs, Landlord Associations, Baale)

#1 Coordinate and lead the communal sanitation of shared spaces — bus stops, open areas, communal drains, and street pavements.
#2 Notify all households on the street of the sanitation date and these guidelines at least 48 hours in advance.
#3 Liaise with the LAWMA district office at least 5 days before sanitation day to confirm collection point locations and timing.
#4 Submit a post-sanitation compliance summary to the Local Government Sanitation Officer within 48 hours.

Landlords and Property Owners

Landlords and Property Owners

#1 Organise a compound sanitation plan and assign cleaning tasks to all tenants and household members at least two days before sanitation day.
#2 Ensure all drainage channels, culverts, and gutters within and fronting the property are fully cleared.
#3 Provide adequate waste bins and clearly marked collection areas within the compound.
#4 Ensure septic tanks and soakaways are properly maintained and not overflowing onto public areas.
#5 Compel all occupants — whether tenants, extended family, or staff — to actively participate.
#6 Report any illegal dumping on or near the premises to the Ministry, LAWMA or the Local Government Sanitation Officer immediately.

Tenants and Household Members

Tenants and Household Members

#1 Participate fully in the compound sanitation organised by the landlord or compound committee.
#2 Clean your personal living space and sort your household waste into the three categories before sanitation morning.
#3 Do not deposit refuse in drains, gutters, empty plots, or at your neighbours’ property.
#4 Cooperate with the compound committee and contribute cleaning materials as requested.
#5 Not take part in any activities that is not related to sanitation exercises (e.g. sport, exercise etc)
