Residents of Ogooluwa community in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State were thrown into mourning on Monday, August 31, after a Celestial Church of Christ pastor allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life.
The clergyman, Bidemi Odukoya, who served as Shepherd of the Iri Orun Parish of the Celestial Church of Christ, reportedly attacked his wife with a machete during a midnight domestic dispute, inflicting a fatal head injury.
According to eyewitnesses, the couple had accused each other of infidelity, with the pastor alleging his wife was having an affair with another man, while she accused him of pursuing a relationship with a woman in his church.
The disagreement, which began as a heated argument around midnight, reportedly escalated into a physical fight, during which Odukoya allegedly struck his wife with the machete.
She collapsed and died from her injuries.
Her 14-year-old son, Daniel, ran out of the house to alert neighbours, who arrived to find her body.
Odukoya, a father of three boys, allegedly fled the community afterwards, making his way to the Coker junction along the Ifo section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, roughly 20 minutes from Akiode community.
He is said to have then thrown himself in front of a moving truck, dying instantly from the impact.
Both husband and wife were buried beside their home on Monday evening.
Confirming the incident, the police command's spokesperson, ASP Opeyemi Oluborode, said an investigation had been launched and that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiry.
