On Thursday, February 5, 2026, the Kano State Fire Service confirmed the heartbreaking death of 18-year-old Yusif Malam-Gwani, who drowned in an open water body at Bachirawa, Kwanar Madugu, in Ungogo Local Government Area.

Director Alhaji Sani Anas disclosed the incident in a statement signed by Public Relations Officer Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, as reported by Punch Newspapers and Peoples Gazette.
A distress call from Sulaiman Abdullahi-Tela alerted rescuers in the afternoon that Malam-Gwani had fallen into the water. Despite swift deployment, the teenager was retrieved dead and handed over to the ward head of Bachirawa Quarters, Jibrin Isah.
In a separate tragedy the same day, eight-year-old Abdussalam Ibrahim fell into a well at Kofar Yamma, Karaye town, in Karaye Local Government Area.
'We received a distress call from one of our staff members, Murtala Magaji, about the incident on Thursday afternoon. Upon receiving the report, a rescue team was immediately deployed to the scene,' Abdullahi explained.
The child was brought out dead and handed over to his father, Malam Musa-Mudi.
The Kano State Fire Service expressed profound sorrow and urged residents to act.
Abdullahi stated, 'The service expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased . Take necessary safety precautions around open wells, open water sources and other hazardous areas, especially to protect children.'
