Marriage should not come at the cost of a person's friendships, hobbies or independence, according to author and social media personality Toni Tone, who is pushing back against the idea that married women should travel only with their husbands.
Toni, who is herself married, said in a video that she loves spending time and travelling with her husband, but does not believe marriage should stop her from going out with friends or taking trips with her sister.
She argued that people often lose sight of what marriage is actually meant to do.
According to her, marriage is meant to add partnership to a person's life, not place restrictions on the lifestyle they already had.
She pointed out that before marriage, most people have friends, hobbies and interests separate from their relationship, and questioned why those things should have to disappear once a couple gets married.
Maintaining friendships and having experiences outside the marriage, she said, is not the same as being disloyal to a partner.
The loyalty, honesty and trustworthiness expected while dating, she argued, should simply continue into marriage, alongside the freedom for both partners to still have a life of their own.
She was careful to clarify that supporting married people travelling with friends is not the same as encouraging bad behaviour away from a spouse.
Toni acknowledged that some couples genuinely prefer to travel only with each other, and said that's a valid choice.
Her issue, she said, is with turning the loss of independent experiences into an unspoken requirement of marriage.
