President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, July 2, playfully referred to his wife, First Lady Remi Tinubu, as “Iya Alakara” (Mama Akara Seller), in an apparent nod to the backlash she faced after urging low-income Nigerians to consider small businesses such as selling akara, roasting corn or making kuli-kuli.

The President made the remark while observing protocol during his address at the Presidential Press Corps Dinner held at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday night.
A video shared online from the event showed Tinubu smiling as he acknowledged dignitaries before turning to his wife.
“Good evening, gentlemen of the press, ladies and gentlemen, my dear wife, the First Lady, Iya Alakara,” the President said, drawing laughter and reactions from the audience.
