Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of Mrs Ogechi John, who is accused of killing her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John, in a brutal incident that has shocked residents of the state.

The suspect, an indigene of Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was picked up by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force over the death of the child at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene, Enugu East Local Government Area.
Neighbours told authorities that the late Amanda had suffered repeated maltreatment from her stepmother before the fatal assault.
They also claimed that the alleged beating occurred around 3 pm on Sunday.
The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, said the state government acted swiftly. “It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide. We swung into action immediately upon learning of this tragedy to ensure the suspect was arrested,” she stated.
Enih added that the government would monitor the legal process to ensure justice is served without delay.
“Nobody should take another person’s life, especially that of a child in Enugu State. We condemn the act in totality,” she declared.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
However, the statement did not disclose the specific police station handling the case or the exact medical cause of the child’s death.
