Police in Anambra State have begun a manhunt for a teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old student so severely that the child died, in a case that has cast a shadow over a small community in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the operation was launched under the police's Safe School Initiative, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Harrison Oruruo.
The team has been mandated to track down the teacher and ensure accountability.
‘The team will, among others, commence a manhunt for a teacher who allegedly flogged a 12-year-old student, resulting in the victim's death at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of the State,’ Ikenga said.
According to the police account, the tragedy unfolded on the evening of July 16, 2026, when officers attached to the Neni Division rushed to the scene after receiving a distress report.
‘On receipt of the report in the evening of July 16, 2026, Police operatives attached to Neni Division responded promptly and rushed the victim to a Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment,’ Ikenga said.
The child's body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and an autopsy.
Police say photographs taken of the victim showed preliminary signs of violence on different parts of his body, details that investigators say will form part of the evidence in the case.
Ikenga said the matter remains under active investigation, with the command working to identify and apprehend the teacher believed to be responsible.
‘To this end, the Command has expressed deep concern over the tragic incident and assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that the Command will conduct a thorough, diligent, and transparent investigation,’ he said.
The police spokesperson added that the command remains committed to protecting schoolchildren across the state through its Safe School Initiative, as the search for the teacher continues.
