A heartbreaking tragedy has left a community in shock after a five-day-old baby girl was fatally mauled by a family dog inside her home in Novi, Michigan.

Emergency responders were called to the residence at about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, where the newborn was found unresponsive with injuries believed to be consistent with an animal attack.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.
According to authorities, the dog, described as a mixed breed, was removed from the home by animal control following the incident.
Investigators say the circumstances surrounding the attack are still unclear, and officials are working to determine what led to the fatal moment.
Family members revealed that the dog had previously lived peacefully with the household and had been around other children without any known issues.
However, in a sudden and devastating turn, it allegedly knocked over the baby’s bassinet and attacked before anyone could intervene.
“A family member reported finding the infant injured with puncture wounds,” Novi Police Commander Bob Manar said, according to PEOPLE.
He added that the newborn’s injuries “appear to be consistent with an animal attack.”
Officials say the dog's fate will be decided after the investigation is complete. Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn the loss of a life that had only just begun.
