20-Year-Old Man Arrested For Allegedly Killing Father With Machete In Anambra

Police in Anambra State have arrested a 20-year-old man, Pascal Ogbogu, for allegedly murdering his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect reportedly attacked his father with a machete blow to the throat on Tuesday evening, after which he abandoned the body in a room and fled the scene.

He was later apprehended in the early hours of Wednesday through a joint effort by police operatives, family members and the Abatete Vigilante, following a distress report.

The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, in which the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, commended the swift response that led to the arrest.

‘The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, has commended the prompt response and community support that contributed to the arrest of a 20-year-old man, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, who is alleged to have murdered his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of the State,’ the statement read.

‘Preliminary information reveals that, on the evening of August 25, 2026, the suspect allegedly attacked his father and fled the scene,’ it added.

According to the police, operatives who responded to the distress call found the victim's body in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to the throat.

‘Following a distress report, Police operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division, with the assistance of family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante, promptly mobilised to the scene, where they found the lifeless body of the deceased in a pool of blood, with a deep machete wound to the throat,’ the statement said.

The body was subsequently deposited at the mortuary for preservation and an autopsy, while efforts to track down the suspect continued through the night.

‘The body was subsequently evacuated to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The suspect, who reportedly fled the scene after the incident, was apprehended in the early hours of August 26, 2026, through the coordinated efforts of the Police and members of the Abatete Vigilante,’ the statement continued.

Police noted that community cooperation played a key role in locating the suspect.

‘His arrest was further facilitated by timely information and cooperation from community members, who assisted security operatives in tracking and locating him,’ the statement added.

The Commissioner of Police specifically commended the family members, community residents, police operatives and vigilante personnel involved in the operation, stressing that community participation and police collaboration remain vital to effective policing and the protection of lives and property.

While extending condolences to the deceased's family, the CP ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and a comprehensive review to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The police assured the public that the investigation would be handled thoroughly and in line with due process.

‘The commissioner assured the family and members of the public that the investigation will be conducted professionally, thoroughly and diligently, in accordance with the law, and that the suspect will be made to face due process upon conclusion of the investigation,’ the statement concluded.
