Thousands of people have poured into the streets of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare as the news of Robert Mugabe’s resignation spread. Some people were seen holding posters of Zimbabwean army chief, Constantino Chiwenga and former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose sacking this month triggered the military takeover that forced Robert Mugabe to resign.

The president’s resignation was made known through a letter he sent to a special joint session of the country’s parliament:
“I, Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation… with immediate effect,” said parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda, reading the letter.

The letter did not, however, did not disclose who would take charge of the country. The speaker added that he was working on legal issues to make sure a new leader was in place by the end of Wednesday.
