The day I learned to show more love to my wife

The day I learned to show more love to my wife

It was on a cloudy Tuesday morning, it had just rained overnight. I decided since I wasn’t going to work, I will use the day to do some shopping for myself. My work clothes were getting old and my shoes were losing their soles. With my ATM card and glasses, I decided not to use the car today, so I walked all the way to the clothing stores at Oshodi market.

2 hours later, I was done with the shopping, ‘Why do I always spend more time than I plan in the market?’ I asked myself.

Then, at once I saw an old woman, she should be in her 70s I thought. She was carrying two large bags of foodstuff, I could see how hard she laboured.

With my home training in mind, I couldn’t watch this old woman suffer, so  I went over to her and without asking carried her bags for her. She almost screamed but when she looked at me and saw how responsible I looked, she smiled and whispered; ‘Thank you, my son.

We walked together, side by side, she quizzed me about my life, my wife, my kids and how long and happy my marriage was. I stuck to the basics about how I and Lola my wife had our bad times but we keep on loving as much as we could, mama laughed.

Now I was curious, she saw that and simply said “Marriage is to be enjoyed and not to be endured” she concluded.

A few meters away we got to her estate, we walked in. That’s when she told me that she had to get back as soon as possible because her husband, Felix would be worried sick about her.  I was puzzled, this couple could have 40 years of marriage under their belt but they still worry about where the other is, no, I had to see to the end of this.

She further told me that Felix always waited outside for her to get back whenever she went out. ‘What kind of man is this?” I asked myself.

As we got to the front of her gateless house, I saw an old, fragile and hairy man walk calmly over to us, he took the bag of foodstuff from me, thanked me for helping as he said it ‘my beautiful Ruth’ and after all the pleasantries between I and them, he took his wife by the hand and they both went into the house. I was in pain!

It immediately got to me, I haven’t been showing Lola enough love and attention, even last night I was too engrossed with my laptop to even stand and welcome her home. The other day, I didn’t even drive up to the airport to meet her after her trip from Ghana. The worst part is Lola would never nag or complain. I need to show more love to my wife.

Oh, God! What am I doing to my wife? The only woman I love and yet can show enough attention to.

NO time, I immediately went back to the market, bought some nice shoes, dresses and ingredients to make her favourite jollof rice and turkey.

When she came back to all my surprises, I went down on my knees and apologised for all my foolishness and begged her to forgive me. She let out the brightest smile I had ever seen in my life, truly this woman is the love of my life.
