Romelu Lukaku finally signs for Chelsea from Inter Milan for £98m
Chelsea FC has revealed that Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has returned to Stamford Bridge in a £98 million transfer.
Lukaku failed at Chelsea and left permanently in 2014, but his success at Inter Milan, where he helped them win the Italian Serie A, prompted Chelsea to complete a £98 million deal to bring him back to the Premier League.
After days of negotiations over the amount and structure of the move, talks with Inter Milan came to an end on Saturday.
After passing the main part of his medical in Milan on Monday, the 28-year-old arrived at Biggin Hill airport on Wednesday evening ahead of his return to Stamford Bridge.
On Tuesday, he travelled to Nice for talks with his agent Federico Pastorello in Monaco, and he returned to west London with an emotional note.
“Welcome home, @RomeluLukaku9,” Chelsea FC stated on their website and social media accounts.
Tuchel, the Chelsea manager, was anxious to add to his attacking options on the eve of the new season as he looks to win the Premier League in 2021-22.
Man United, where he played for two years before moving to Inter, will get £3.8 million as a sell-on clause in the deal to bring him back.
Lukau scored 87 goals in 166 appearances for Everton, 42 goals in 96 appearances for Manchester United, and 64 goals in 95 games for Inter.
“I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club,” Lukaku said on the club’s website. “It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.
“The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.
“The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully, we can have a lot of success together.
“Since I left Chelsea, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies. I can’t wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success.”
