Players form human shield around Samuel Kalu after Eagles superstar collapsed on the pitch (photos)
On Sunday, August 15, Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu, who plays for Bordeaux in France, collapsed on the pitch during a Ligue 1 match against Marseille.
After Samuel Kalu fainted on the pitch, Bordeaux and Marseille players form a human shield around him.
In sweltering conditions at the Stade Velodrome, the 23-year-old Nigerian collapsed just five minutes into their match. Kalu was concerned about the situation, as players on both teams requested medical care.

Players formed a human shield around Kalu while he was being treated on the pitch at one point, similar to what happened when Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opening against Finland.
Thankfully, Kalu recovered quickly and was able to get back on his feet. He was escorted off the field by his teammates while wearing an ice pack on his head, but he eventually returned to play before being replaced by Remi Oudin.
Those in attendance gave the Nigerian a standing ovation for his heroic attempts to continue playing after his breakdown.
Although the cause of the occurrence is unknown, it is not the first time he has passed out on a football field. Kalu fell due to severe dehydration during a Nigerian team training session during the African Cup of Nations in 2019.
“With what happened with Eriksen at the Euros, we think about it. Everyone got a little scared. Fortunately, it ended well.
“According to the doctors, it’s a simple discomfort but he will certainly be undergoing tests on Monday.”
“I was thinking about what happened during the Euro,” admitted Bordeaux coach Vladimir Petkovic.
“With the medical team, we chose to replace him so as not to take any risks. In these cases, football takes a back seat.”
Eriksen’s collapse at the Euros brought up thoughts of his collapse for Bordeaux. CPR was given to the Danish midfielder on the pitch, and his heart was re-started with a defibrillator before he was brought to the hospital, where he recovered after undergoing heart surgery.
