Messi to become highest-paid player in Europe
Lionel Messi’s new contract with Barcelona will see him earn around £500,000-a-week after tax, a huge pay rise which takes him above Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest-paid player in Europe.
Messi is currently on £365,000-a-week, but the club has offered him an increase of 37%, as they seek to tie the 29-year-old down.
The deal will elapse in 2021, with his release clause rising to a massive £350million.
Messi’s current contract is set to expire in 2018, but the player has stated that he wants to remain at the Camp Nou.
“It’s what I always dreamed and what I always wanted. I would like to finish my career at Barcelona,” Messi told Tencent Sports.
