The President of an Ijede Customary Court in Ikorodu, Mrs Omolara Abiola, has advised religious leaders to pray more and continue to preach against all forms of battering and maltreatment against women.
Speaking on Friday, the 6th of October 2017, Abiola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that wife battering and various human right abuses are still common in the society.

She said: “Our religious leaders need to do more preaching against maltreatment and emotional traumatising of the female gender.
“The religious leaders have to condemn it, the condemnation of such anti-social acts must be backed up with the leaders projecting model on how women should be treated in the society.
“Victory against the maltreatment of women generally will only be assured if our leaders across all sectors, especially the religious subsector, represent the model of the ideal.”
Abiola, however, spoke against religious leaders who engaged in extra-marital affairs with wives of other men. She also said that such religious leaders were fond of telling lies and assaulting their wives emotionally. She advised them to stay away from the negative act.
She revealed her worries over “many gullible women in our society who have caved-in to pressures of fake and bad clergymen who exploit their weaknesses for self-enjoyment.’’

Abiola maintained that inheritance laws that marginalised female children should be reviewed as women are now a potential force of development in Nigeria.
