The Government of Lagos through the state commissioner for transport, Mr Anofiu Elegushi, has suspended transport unionism of the NURTW, particularly in Oshodi.
This came into being as a result of the murder of popular union leader and member of the NURTW, Rasaq Bello, popularly known as Hamburger. Hamburger was killed in a gun battle at Owode street Oshodi on Nigeria’s democracy day, May 29, 2017. came on the heels of the murder of a popular union leader, Rasaq Bello, aka Hamburger.
Prior his death, Hamburger was the Chairman of Motorcycle Operators’ Association of Lagos State, Oshodi chapter.
The Commissioner gave this order at a press briefing on Monday, stating expressly that the decision will affect all seven branches of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers operating units.
In reference to this order, the Commissioner has stated that there won’t be the collection of money from transporter or any issuance of tickets from vehicle plying the Oshodi route.
The decision will affect all the seven branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers operating in Oshodi area.
The commissioner said while the order lasts, there will be no issuance of tickets or collection of money from commercial vehicles operating in the area.
