A South African female warder committed suicide on Monday the 17th of October 2017 after her photos with a male inmate hugging and kissing each other went viral on social media.
The photos taken show the female warder hugging and kissing the male inmate but the place where they were and the person who took the pictures are still unclear.
Facebook and Twitter users shared the photo of the unidentified female warder from the Losperfontein Correctional Service Centre near Brits in North West posing in uniform with a male prisoner.
After the development was brought to the department’s attention, it was later confirmed in a statement that the prison warder had committed suicide.
The regional commissioner for North West, Mandla Mkhabela, said during investigation about the images, they had learnt with shock that the warder committed suicide.
Mkhabela said the behaviour of engaging inmates in acts of intimacy was not allowed. He said: “This is disturbing and strictly prohibited. The department condemns this in the strongest possible terms.”
According to The Sowetan, the female warder was found hanging at her residence in the staff quarters of the prison.
The South Africa Depression And Anxiety Group operations director Cassey Chambers said: “With social media anything goes viral so quickly and you find people who have no relation to the matter making comments and sharing it. That puts on added pressure and cyberbullying. as it could be a last straw. Maybe she thinks there would be an impact on family.”
Here is the statement issued by the Department of Correctional Services:
