Roger Federer who tore the meniscus in his knee and had to undergo arthroscopic surgery to sort the problem in 2016 after injuring himself when preparing a bath for his twin daughters.

This forced the 36-year-old tennis star out the ATP Finals last season – and he thought it was the end.

Federer who is the 19-time Grand Slam champion in an interview said

“The moment I went into surgery was scary because I’d never had surgery before.

“The moment I woke up from surgery, I didn’t know if I was ever going to come back from this.”

“I was OK with the idea of it all ending.”

But the knee problem couldn’t keep Federer down. He has come back to win two Grand Slams this season and he is the big favourite to win the ATP Finals this week.

“Maybe as far ago as winning Wimbledon for the first time in 2003 I was OK if it all ended.

“I know it sounds strange but I’d achieved my lifelong dream of winning a Wimbledon title.

“But really, ever since Paris in 2009 [when he completed the career Grand Slam by winning the French Open], I was totally at peace with it ending the next day.” He added.

“It’s such a cool feeling because it’s nice to be surprised later in your life.

“To do this now was such a beautiful thing and every time it was a surprise: Australia, Miami, Indian Wells.”

Federer beat Alexander Zverev over three sets on Tuesday to book his place in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour.
