Odunayo Ajani And Adenike Akindude

Workers of Berger Paints Nigeria PLC continues to protest against the decision of the board of management of the company for stopping their gratuity payment.

The protest which started on the 12th of June 2017 is still ongoing as they refuse to relent in their effort until their voice is heard.

The protest has been very peaceful as the workers sit at the entrance of the company, singing, and dancing.

Dailyfamily.ng gathered that the management has not responded positively but they are looking for various means to stop the protest.

According to the Assistant Secretary of the Junior staff union of Berger Paints Nigeria PLC, Comrade Adewale Owoyele who has served in the company for 16 years, he said:

“the agreement has come out from CANPEF the body that governs management side of companies and the national body that govern and look after the welfare of staff in March 2017 that gratuity continues and our management is part of CANPEF”.

He went further to say that “our own management don’t want to follow that agreement” He said the solution to the situation is that the management should agree with the agreement of CANPEF that gratuity continues.

Mr. Owoyele expressed his dissatisfaction with the action of the management of the company as he explained that their job expose them to chemicals and after working with commitment in that environment for about 20 years, it will be sad if you are just asked to leave without nothing to fall back on despite the fact that you have a family to take care of.

He mentioned that this new management took over two years ago and since then the environment has not been conducive for the workers. He said their protest is not for Berger Paints workers alone but for all other workers.

The workers are determined to fight till the end. The National Labour Congress is stepping in and other unions to join them in fighting for their rights.
