In Takoradi, Western Region, a Ghanaian woman was sentenced to prison for faking her own kidnapping.
Joana Krah, 29, was sentenced to six years in jail by the Takoradi Harbour Circuit Court A on two charges of misleading a public officer and publishing false news on Tuesday, October 26.
On October 22, Ms. Krah pretended to be kidnapped in order to extort $5,000 from a relative.
According to police, she collaborated with two people to carry out the crime, following which she called her godfather and demanded the ransom.
On Monday, October 25, 2021, she was arraigned before the court presided over by Michael Kojo Ampadu after pleading guilty to the charges.
She was sentenced to two years in jail for publishing fake news and six years in prison for manipulating a public authority, bringing her total term to eight years in prison.
However, because both terms are to be served simultaneously, she will be sentenced to six years in jail.
Joana is a first-time offender, she has a kid, and she cooperated with investigators and reported herself to the police when the incident was reported to the police, according to the court.
