Bisi Adewale, a prolific writer and family coach, in Ten Commandments for Husbands, borrows from Moses’s Ten Commandments in the old testament of the Bible as a precursor to exploring the rules that govern the husband in the family. With elucidating “First Word” geared from the scriptural insight of the Genesis chapter two type of marriage, Bisi Adewale ignites the fire of the Ten Commandments for Husbands with the words “you have adopted a lot of ‘strategies’ but all seem to be to no avail. All you need is wisdom, if you add prayer to this, then I am sure you will soon start to enjoy your home.” (5).

Understanding the Ten Commandments for Husbands-dailyfamily.ng

After the intriguing “First Word,” Ten Commandments for Husbands opens with “thou shall not fail to enthrone God in your home.” This first commandment simply means that the husband must enthrone God as the head of the family, not self but God. For when God is enthroned as the head of the home, “troubles and tears will be far away and the longer you stay before God the stronger you become” (13). But when God is not enthroned in the home, “you are welcoming trouble.”

This first commandment for husbands is in tangent with the first commandment that God gave to the children of Israel as they journeyed through the wilderness which says that: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” This first commandment is the substratum of every other rule that governs the family. And when this first commandment for husband “thou shall not fail to enthrone God in your home” isn’t the heart of the matter in a family, the home is on an expressway to destruction.

Amidst other commandments like “thou shall not fail to be faithful to your wife,” “thou shall not fail to have vision,” “thou shall not fail to satisfy your wife sexually,” the seventh commandment, “thou shall not fail to love your wife,” is the mystery of a successful married life. The love of the husband for his wife must be infectious, for “love is a good disease; spread it.” (57). Besides, “love is a partial blindness…it is blind to other women…it is humble and ready to suffer for the sake of the other partner.” (57).  With this insightful illumination of love, the seventh commandment, “thou shall not fail to love your wife,” is central to achieving the other commandments for husbands apart from the first commandment, “thou shall not fail to enthrone God in your home.”

Ten Commandments for Husbands tackles the fundamental issues that husbands face in their homes in order to breach the long-aged conflicts that engulf the husband-wife relationship. And in the process, this book cuts out practical steps on how to deal with issues such as sex in marriage, finance, and the role of man in the married life.

In fact, the ninth commandment, “thou shalt not fail to satisfy your wife sexually” is a must-read for every husband. The sexual innuendoes that make up the husband-wife relationship are demystified using practical methods. The commandments for husbands in this marriage manual aren’t strenuous, they are only hinged on the first commandment, “Thou Shall Not Fail to Enthrone God in Your Home.”

Ten Commandments for Husbands sparks with the dynamism of the headship of the husband and the strands of responsibility that make up a real man. You know what, this book is for every real man that wants to understand the complexities of the married life.
