Your resume should be readily available, summarize your achievements and abilities and illuminate your professional experience.
While a CV’s structure is flexible and adapts to your unique skills and experiences, employers expect to see specific sections in your CV independently:
- Your updated contact information
Your name, professional title, and contact details should be given in the first part of your resume, positioned at the top of the page. Tell your name as the title instead of titling your curriculum vitae or CV.
Your email and telephone numbers are essential when it comes to your contact details.
Moreover, given the importance of digital presence, please include a link to your LinkedIn profile and keep it up-to-date. Lastly, you can also add a link to your website and online portfolio if you work in a creative field.
- Your resume introduction
This section is one of the most important parts of your resume below your contact details. The way you start your curriculum vitae will depend on a number of factors, including business, your stage of your career, and your role.
Four ways to introduce yourself are as follows:
(i) Resume summary: showcase your accomplishments in bullet points which include quantifiable data i.e. numbers and percentages.
(ii) Career objective: this usually involves 2-3 sentences aiming for a specific role which are aligned with the objectives of the company.
(iii) Professional qualifications: this is a combination of the resume summary and career objective. This is not aimed at a particular role and maybe in bullet or paragraph format. Ideally, it would be best if your CV were distributed.
(iv) Qualifications summary: These typically consist of 5-6 bullet points that highlight your skills and are especially useful in applications for a role in another industry.
Always remember to keep it short and simple (KISS).
- Your experience & employment history
The heart and soul of your curriculum vitae are your work experience. This section needs to be in top form!
Indicate your job title, employer, dates, and a line that summarizes the role when you list each job position (in reverse chronological order). Next, the bullet highlights your key responsibilities, skills, and achievements and strengthens the impact of each item with powerful words and figures. The most important thing about this section is that it has to be fulfilled. Prove the motivation to do and do more to your prospective employer.

- Your education and qualifications
Your education should be in the opposite chronological order, as your experiences section. Include the names of the institutions and the dates, the qualifications, and the grade you achieved, if applicable. Leave your high school experience off if you have a master’s/bachelor’s degree.
- Your skills, certifications & volunteer experience
This section should focus on the job you are applying for and should include the industry’s best resume skills. Do not forget to add skills that can be transferred to the industry!
NOTE: It is no longer needed to add your referees to the end of your CV, so removing this action and sending them on request is acceptable.
Read over your descriptions to double-check that each line brings value to your resume as a whole: Are your statements clear, active, and individual?
Finally, ensure that you have consistent formatting. Your typography should be styled consistently throughout the page, including spacing, font size, bolding, and headings.
